Championships

Buford Athletics has built a championship tradition spanning nearly a century. The school’s documented championship history begins with an individual men’s track and field title in 1928 and continues through the accomplishments of today’s student-athletes.

Across team competition, Buford has recorded 68 state championships between 1964 and 2026. These titles represent success in football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics, track and field, lacrosse, cheerleading, and other sports. Several seasons featured championships in multiple programs, demonstrating the depth and consistency of excellence throughout Buford Athletics.

Buford’s success has also extended to the national level, with six documented national team championships. The softball program earned national titles in 2014, 2016, 2022, 2023, and 2025, while the football program added a national championship in 2025. These achievements placed Buford’s student-athletes and teams among the best in the country and strengthened the program’s reputation for excellence beyond state competition.

The national championships also reflect periods of sustained leadership within the program. Softball captured national titles under coaches Tony Wolfe and Trent Adams, while Coach Bryant Appling led football to its documented 2025 national championship. Their leadership, together with the commitment of their student-athletes and coaching staffs, helped Buford achieve recognition on a national stage.

Buford’s championship legacy further includes more than 140 documented individual and relay titles. Student-athletes have reached the top of the podium in wrestling, gymnastics, swimming and diving, cross country, and numerous track and field events. Champions have distinguished themselves in sprints, hurdles, distance races, jumps, throwing events, relays, vault, bars, beam, floor exercise, swimming events, and wrestling weight divisions.

The program’s history includes remarkable stretches of sustained success. Buford teams captured multiple championships throughout the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, with several academic years producing titles across multiple sports. Individual athletes have also returned to championship competition in consecutive seasons, while others earned multiple titles in different events during the same year.

Every state and national championship reflects countless hours of preparation, disciplined coaching, teamwork, perseverance, and support from the Buford community. Behind each title are student-athletes who embraced the responsibility of representing their school and coaches who challenged them to compete with confidence, character, and purpose.

These accomplishments are more than a record of trophies and winning seasons. Together, they tell the story of generations of athletes, coaches, families, alumni, administrators, and supporters who helped establish Buford as one of the most accomplished athletic programs in the state and nation.

From the earliest documented champions to the teams and individuals continuing the tradition today, Buford Athletics remains united by a shared standard of excellence. Each championship honors the achievements of the past while inspiring future generations to pursue new milestones and add their own chapter to the Buford legacy.
