CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Buford's defense turned four first-half takeaways into touchdowns as the top-ranked Wolves defeated Mallard Creek 41-7 Friday night.
Jameer Cantrell scored on two fumble returns, while Ethan Hauser added another scoop-and-score and Jewlyan Dillard returned an interception for a touchdown. The defensive surge helped Buford build a 34-7 halftime advantage despite producing only 94 yards of offense during the opening half.
Evan Griffeth opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal. Cantrell recorded Buford's first touchdown when he recovered a fumble and returned it 39 yards, giving the Wolves a 10-0 lead with 2:22 remaining in the first quarter.
Mallard Creek answered with its only touchdown of the night before Buford's defense took complete control.
Hauser returned a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter. Dillard intercepted a pass and raced 41 yards to the end zone less than two minutes later.
Cantrell completed the first-half defensive scoring spree with a 31-yard fumble return at the 3:20 mark. Griffeth then connected from 47 yards as time expired, sending the Wolves into halftime with a 27-point lead.
Buford's offense produced its lone touchdown in the third quarter. D.J. Hunter connected with Cantrell for a 27-yard score with 7:11 remaining in the period, extending the lead to 41-7.
Cantrell finished the night with three total touchdowns—two on defense and one receiving. Hauser contributed a touchdown and forced a fumble, while Dillard supplied the interception return.
Hunter completed 5 of 15 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown. The Wolves finished with 222 total yards after being limited to 94 before halftime.
Buford also played a disciplined game, committing only two penalties while holding Mallard Creek scoreless throughout the second half.
The victory improved the Wolves to 2-0 following their season-opening 39-19 win over Gainesville. Mallard Creek fell to 2-1.
Buford returns home to Phillip Beard Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 10, to face Miami Central of Florida.
