BUFORD, Ga. — There may not have been a place in the standings for Friday night's result, but there was no mistaking the significance of the match up.

Buford opened its 2026 football campaign by welcoming Baylor School of Chattanooga to Phillip Beard Stadium on August 7. The preseason scrimmage brought together two undefeated state champions and two programs that ended 2025 ranked among the best teams in the country.

For the Wolves, it was an opportunity to move beyond offseason expectations and begin evaluating the next version of a championship program under the lights.

Buford completed a perfect 15-0 season in 2025, captured the GHSA Class 6A state championship and finished No. 1 in the final USA TODAY Sports Super 25 rankings. The Wolves outscored their opponents by an average of 33.6 points before defeating Carrollton 28-21 in the state championship game. The title was the 15th in program history. Friday's opponent arrived with championship credentials of its own. Baylor went 12-0 in 2025, defeated Brentwood Academy 28-24 for the Tennessee Division II-AAA championship and finished No. 13 nationally in the Super 25.

That pedigree made this much more than a routine preseason tune-up.

A Test Built for Buford

The scrimmage gave Buford an immediate look at the speed, strength and execution required against elite competition.

Baylor entered the season featuring highly regarded running back David Gabriel-Georges, a two-time Tennessee Mr. Football winner, along with Ole Miss quarterback commit and Elite 11 finalist Keegan Croucher. WDEF reported the matchup when it was announced in June.

For Buford, facing that level of talent offered exactly what a preseason scrimmage should provide: meaningful repetitions, difficult situations and film that can expose the details still needing attention.

The Wolves are replacing several important contributors from last season's championship roster, but the expectations surrounding the program have not changed. Friday night allowed new starters and emerging players to experience varsity football against an opponent capable of challenging them physically and mentally.

From the sideline, the intensity resembled something beyond an ordinary exhibition. Linemen battled through contact, defenders pursued to the football and both teams played with the urgency expected from programs carrying championship standards.

Because it was a scrimmage, the most valuable results will not be found in a final score. They will emerge in the film room: alignment, communication, tackling, ball security, assignment discipline and how each unit responded when placed under pressure.

Another Big Night at Phillip Beard Stadium

The match up also placed a national-caliber event inside one of Georgia's newest football venues.

The $62 million Phillip Beard Stadium opened in 2025 and serves as the home of Buford football. The 32-acre, city-owned facility was designed to host football games and other major community events.

Bringing another state champion into the stadium for a preseason scrimmage reflected both Buford's national profile and its willingness to seek demanding competition.

The Bigger Picture

Buford's schedule will not allow the Wolves much time to ease into the season.

The regular season begins August 22 against Gainesville in a nationally televised match up. The Wolves' 2026 schedule also includes road tests against Mallard Creek in North Carolina and defending Georgia contender Grayson, followed by region matchups with programs including Collins Hill, Mill Creek and Dacula. 

That makes the Baylor scrimmage valuable well beyond one August night.

It supplied live repetitions against a championship opponent. It gave the coaching staff an early evaluation of its personnel. Most importantly, it reminded the Wolves what awaits any team carrying Buford across the front of its jersey: every opponent's best effort.

The defending champions have officially stepped back onto the field.

The next chapter is underway.
