COMMERCE — Buford's cross country teams turned in a pair of top-11 varsity finishes Saturday at the North Georgia Cross Country Championships, highlighted by a top-five individual showing in the girls race and a sub-17-minute performance in the boys race.
The meet was held Aug. 29 at East Jackson High School and featured Navy, Silver and junior-varsity divisions. Both Buford varsity teams competed in the Navy Division against one of the event's strongest fields.
Buford Girls Place Ninth
Jasmine Jones led the Wolves by completing the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 44.89 seconds. She finished fifth in a field of 171 runners and was one of only six competitors to break 20 minutes.
Olivia Park was Buford's second finisher, placing 56th in 22:22.53. Emma Webb followed in 23:02.98, with Maye Nordholz and Maria Riano Lopez crossing the line less than a second apart. Nordholz finished in 23:05.27, and Riano Lopez recorded a time of 23:05.96.
Those five performances gave Buford a ninth-place team finish with 305 points. The Wolves posted a scoring average of 22:16 and a spread of 3:21 between their first and fifth finishers.
Jaelyn Ozkan added a time of 23:39.06, Violet Malagon finished in 24:54.46, and Kayla Davis completed the race in 25:16.51.
Marietta won the girls team championship with 33 points, followed by Harrison with 88 and Wesleyan with 123. Harrison's Norah Hickerson captured the individual championship in 18:44.50.

Buford Boys Place 11th
Matthew Pham turned in Buford's fastest performance of the day, placing 15th among 229 runners with a time of 16:43.10. He finished less than eight seconds outside the top 10 and averaged approximately 5:23 per mile.
Zachary LaForce was the Wolves' second runner across the line, finishing in 17:57.14. Max Steele followed closely in 18:01.64.
Buford's next four runners finished within nine seconds of one another. Christopher Taylor posted an 18:35.00, Ethan Bailey finished in 18:36.07, Sam Foster recorded an 18:38.06 and Matthew Jennings crossed in 18:43.48.
Taylor and Bailey were separated by only 1.07 seconds, while just 8.48 seconds separated Buford's fourth through seventh finishers.
The Wolves placed 11th in the boys team standings with 365 points. Buford's five scoring runners averaged 17:58 and finished within a 1:52 spread.
Tripp Bennett completed the course in 19:25.18. William Mayorga and Mateo Cabezas finished back-to-back in 19:43.66 and 19:44.69, respectively. Hunter Curry recorded a time of 22:02.57.
Denmark claimed the boys team championship with 51 points. Harrison placed second with 88, and West Forsyth finished third with 140. Harrison's Riley Comstock won the individual race in 15:35.06.
