BUFORD, Ga. — ESPN has officially confirmed Buford's season-opening matchup against Gainesville as part of the network's 2026 High School Football Kickoff.
The game, which Buford previously announced, will be played Saturday, August 22, at 5 p.m. at Phillip Beard Stadium. It will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and available through the ESPN App.
ESPN included the matchup in its official seven-game kickoff schedule released July 30. The national showcase will feature six teams ranked in the SC Next Top 25 and 33 athletes included in the ESPN 300 or ESPN Junior 300.
The network's announcement lists Buford as the nation's No. 1 team following a perfect 15-0 season, the GHSA Class 6A state championship and a No. 1 national finish in 2025.
ESPN also highlighted Buford seniors Tank Watson, a Michigan commit, and Ethan Hauser, a Vanderbilt commit, along with highly regarded juniors Luke Nabors and Seven Rashad.
Gainesville enters the matchup following a 12-3 season and an appearance in the 2025 Class 5A state championship game. The Red Elephants return several nationally recognized players, including Kharim Hughley, Alabama commit Nigel Newkirk and ESPN Junior 300 defensive back Jai'lil Goley.
The official ESPN announcement further establishes the matchup as one of the country's premier opening-week contests and places Phillip Beard Stadium before a national audience.
